Answers to your questions will follow, but I do need to say first that there has been progress, and although the wy of getting there was extremely vague, things now do work properly. I'll say more in a general reply later. So the urgency is gone, but I still fail to understand what happened. I can live with that, though not gladly. Anyway. Compiling/linking is done in the most elementary way, via make with no makefile (so make hello from the source hello.c).
