Ah, but I installed liberation-fonts-ttf-1.06.0.20100721.tar.gz from https://fedorahosted.org/liberation-fonts/, and *DID* see the problem. That is, after installation, Liberation Mono did not show up in mintty's font selection window. I'm running Vista natively (no VM), but I haven't rebooted since installing the font (if that makes a difference).
