It's not just normal, it's required.
can you point me to the conversation that was done a year ago when beech broke this port? seems what he committed was a 40x reduction in distfile size. that conversation might shed some light on the situation. In the mean time, I have asked the maintainer about this, and have pinged portmgr, and maybe I'll email beech and see if he remember. In the mean time, I will try to search the archives and look for this conversation.
