CSS table comes handy if one wants to replicate the old/new HTML table
designs. Other than that "table" is a bit too inflexible design-wise,
regardless of support, IMO.

...and it is much easier to turn a CSS table into something else when
one wants/needs to, than to break up an HTML table.

Well, web design trends tend to go in circles, so decade-old design
methods may look all new again to some.

Personally I'm hoping to see something better than table for layout
before too long, so we can have some progress.
