If the backgrounds on both sides of the inner content block can
disappear behind the fixed-width left and right columns, then it
shouldn't really be much of a problem. A "too wide" container around the
content block and negative backside margins on floated side columns,
should work.
My site has had such overlapping elements for 4 years now, but it
doesn't show since I don't use the "too wide" containers for backgrounds
- only alignment.

However, since I don't want to create examples from scratch, or modify
my own site, maybe you have something half-made we can all look at. Link?
