  I don't know if anyone did any rigorous study. I experimented
with adding patterns from IIRC about a thousand games where

        (i) Pachi was black
        (ii) White was high dan (usually, this was a handi game)
        (iii) The move was white's

to my pattern corpus, with the rationale that this way Pachi would
learn to expect refutations to its common mistakes this way. The effect
was negligible if any (I was not able to measure any statistically
significnant improvement).
