English is weird. http://www.answers.com/topic/night says among other
definitions:
  1. a. The period between sunset and sunrise, especially the hours of
darkness.
  3. a. The period between evening and bedtime.

It seems to me that in the U.S.A. entry 3.a. is the most common meaning,
while I guess Nick meant it in the 1.a. sense.

For further confusion, there is also this one:
4.a. The period between bedtime and morning: *spent the night at a motel.
