It is not a false premise , which would allow to prove anything.
It s "thought experiment" (to reuse Don's vocabulary, i guess
taken from Albert Einstein)

He did "thought experiments" and wondered :
what would i see if i was seating on a light ray ?

Of course its impossible, and A.Einstein explained why, but
the "thought experiment" was usefull and led to relativity...

Again to understand why gravitation bend light, you can just
imagine you are in a spaceship uniformly accelerated, and
so you will see a bent light ray. This is just a thought experimant
but usefull to understand hard stuff.
