   General consensus in Slack is that sending NULL (i.e. 0 bytes) is unexpected 
and not ideal (though maybe correct technically speaking) behavior. I'd like to 
make this change in 2.x since it's a major change. I'm wondering if we have to 
make it opt-in or we have to provide a way for people to fallback to the old 
behavior if they rely on it. Thoughts?
