Maybe I am missing something really obvious, but can't you just tell your users:
        1) Go to "Library" by clicking the "Go" menu while holding the ALT key 
down
        2) Go to Preferences, delete "com.yourcompany.yourapp.plist"
        3) Restart your computer

This procedure should work on Mavericks, and should be easy to acomplish even 
by inexperienced users.

Also, from my experience with customers, restarting the computer alone is often 
surprisingly effective in resolving the most elusive issues.
