Set the size to zero instead.  You can do it in a window controller:

        [[[self window] standardWindowButton:NSWindowMiniaturizeButton]
setFrame:NSZeroRect];
        [[[self window] standardWindowButton:NSWindowZoomButton]
setFrame:NSZeroRect];
