You can set a delegate on the unarchiver and use:

- (Class) unarchiver:(NSKeyedUnarchiver*) unarchiver cannotDecodeObjectOfClassName:(NSString*) name originalClasses: (NSArray*) classNames;

to avoid this problem. (If I've understood it properly)
