I don’t have a fuel issue, as I often get either some smoke or some raw fuel
coming out the exhaust when it finally starts, so there’s plenty of fuel in my
case.

I found article in 48 North with a simple DIY test to see if it’s piston rings
or valves causing a compression problem.

I’ll try this to see if it shows any results.

Thank you everyone for the input.

On my 3GMf (20hp) I have to increase the throttle a little in order for the
engine to start. It hasn't been a big deal, so I haven't looked into the cause.
It didn't do this when I first got the boat (25 years ago). I replaced the fuel
line some time ago, and I'm wondering whether I didn't tighten it enough, so
that the fuel might be flowing back into the tank when the engine hasn't run
for a while. With the fuel line empty, it would take some cranking for the fuel
to come back. I'll check the connections the next time I'm at the boat. I'll
also check the air filter as recommended in Meredith Anderson's article in
Practical Sailor.

I’ve tried every imaginable throttle position, and yes, full seems to work best
as the manual suggests.

I read somewhere that when the throttle is in the full position, it actually
retards the injection pump to assist in starting.
