Hello all,
This summer while cruising we hit a rock on the leading bottom edge of the keel. After inspecting stringers and diving we decided it was not major and left the boat in for the rest of the summer. When we hauled Talisman last week we were able to fully examine the issue. Of course, as in typical 2020 fashion, I had done the keel joint this spring and it came out great. Now we have marching cracks about 12-18 inches long on either side of in the surface glass of the bands I added and on the back edge of the keel where it compressed. The ones in front I peeled back some and they are just the top layer of the bands. The ones in the stern edge are about 4 inches long and also look to be the new glass that was added. My major concern is that I had a stream of bilge water coming from the stern above the keel seam area after she was pulled. I assume leaking down the keel bolts into the sump. No salt water in the bilge. All floor boards and been pulled and no stringer damage and no apparent delamination after tapping out the area. I am trying to determine a game plan and I am somewhat leery of putting in a claim on the boat. What I think needs to happen is to grind everything back, drop the keel, reseal and start the keel joint process over again. Of course the mast is in as I did a refit to it last year so that would need to get pulled. Any input would be welcomed! John McCrea Talisman 1979 36-1 Mystic, CT
