Thank you Christian. I believe sometimes the Coast Guard loses sight of the cost vs. value benefit of ATONs especially when it comes to maintenance. Channel markers in 10-20 fathoms makes a big difference to the big tugs, barges and commercial vessels transiting places like Buzzards Bay, but the majority of distress calls I hear on channel 16 are the guys that run up on the rocks in Woods Hole or Orient Point where the water depth goes from 40’ down to 4’ in a matter of yards. Those need to be clearly marked and even lit. Solar panels are cheap enough that most ATONs should be lighted buoys, IMHO.

Wondering what they are doing with the info? I took the survey. It didn't take long. If it is a way to save money by not putting boyes in shallow water that would be just stupid. At low tide in the harbor I go in and out of four feet outside the channel you would be high and dry. Without those channel markers it would be scary. This is what was posted: The Coast Guard is soliciting PUBLIC INPUT until Nov. 1st on AIDS to NAVIGATION located in less than 12 feet of water. It could be a prelude to trying to discontinue them. As many people as possible should take the survey – it only takes a few minutes – and will help to indicate how important the ATONS are – The survey is at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ShallowWaterWAMS The survey ends NOV 1st so inform all of your fellow boating enthusiasts ASAP.
