Depending on the transmission the shaft may be allowed to spin or may have to be locked. For fixed blade props allowing the shaft to spin causes less resistance but may not be compatible with your transmission... Then again stopping the shaft be putting it in gear may not be compatible either. This combination of incompatibilities would necessitate an independent shaft brake.
I didn't retain all the other practices which don't apply to my situation, I apologize. I have a Yanmar engine, Kanzaki transmission and feathering Max-Prop. In order to stop the shaft and feather the prop I momentarily place the engine into reverse and then back to neutral. This keeps the engine out of gear, the shaft stopped, and the prop feathered.
