While the yard has the boat in the slings and is powerwashing the hull, I go around with a large scotchbrite pad on a sanding pole. The pole has a swivel joint on the end and a pad that grabs the scotchbrite. Sheetrock sanding poles are sinilar. Anyway, I wait for him to get the whole boat wet and when he finishes, I ask him for 30 minutes to scrub the hull. Then I go around the whole hull scubbing off any loose paint or slime and it leaves the bottom fairly smooth. I do the same thing with a scrubber and hose before painting. I use brown pads which are a little more aggressive than red but red would work just as well.
