Bruce, I have a 16" 3 blade max-prop tied to my Yanmar 3HM35F (~35HP max output@3600rpm), C&C 37+. I have no experience with anything else but can say that the service, support, design and operation of this product and company are very satisfying. Mine is the original model which is extremely challenging to adjust in the water but could technically be done. I HAVE disassembled, cleaned, and adjusted mine multiple times on dry land. My engine had slightly lost timing advance causing a reduction in power, over the years I tweaked the prop to account for the reduction. When I fixed the issue with the engine I now found that I was under pitched and was able to easily adjust back. Adjustability is an awesome flexibility. Reverse seems just as powerful as forward and prop walk to port is apparent but not problematic... In fact I have learned to use it for docking and prefer docking on port
I believe that Dwight has recommended the AutoProp in the past. It sounds like maybe it auto pitches itself based on RPM/load? I would definitely consider an AutoProp or Ken Heaton's J-prop in the future if I was looking for an alternative....of course I would throw an updated version of the Max-prop into the considerations as well.
