On the Yanmar QM, GM, HM series there is no turbo so the suction may not be as strong or the intake pipe diameter is smaller so less force is felt on the hand. Either way, I've stopped my 3HM35F engine numerous times by covering the intake with my hand. Then again I'm not stopping it at full throttle or in a run away condition. I've heard that some engines have an emergency stop plate or emergency stop lever that is used to block the intake pipe.
I left the fuel line shut this last winter. When I started up in the spring to head over to the travel lift everything ran fine and warmed up easy...until I was just off the dock. The engine started running poorly and I immediately jumped down to open the fuel valve. The engine died anyway. It turned out that the suction on the fuel header had drawn enough air in to the Racor through tiny leaks that I had to re-prime the entire fuel system - twice! All while dead in the water and single handing it!
