Finding and identifying the fuel shut-off lever is a good thing for any skipper with a diesel axillary engine--before you need to locate it when the engine refuses to quit--don't ask me how I know! OTOH, I would not recommend putting your hand over the air intake pipe/filter housing with the engine running. I tried that recently on my 28 hp Beta and the suction was so great that I had to get my hand out of there before the engine came near to quitting. I almost had a 3 inch diameter suction 'hickey' on my palm before I decided to stop the engine with another method--that is when I found the manual fuel shut-off on the engine! BTH, using the main fuel shut-off on the outlet of the fuel tank should also work--but there could be a fair amount of fuel to be burned down stream of this valve before the engine is starved.
