Surely the shrouds are always the same length, so you can see the turnbuckles
to make sure the two sides are similar.
For many years I was told our boats leaned to one side or the other, and that I
should plan on getting them to lean to starboard (the favored tack in the
Bermuda Race) . . . but the interiors are never symmetrical, and tankage is
worse . . .
Probably the important thing is that the mast lines up with the keel. The keel
mounting could be out 1/4 of a degree and it would be a real project to measure
that and get the mast to match.
Suffice to say, that differences from one tack or the other can be caused by a
number of factors . . . .
I dealt with a 150 yacht last year, and they had the same problem. It
eventually turned out the foil shape on one side of the rudder was slightly
different than the foil shape on the other, and the result was a starboard tack
bias . . . . . . .
So, you might check your keel foils and rudder foils for symmetry . . . . and
check that the rudder lines up with the keel . . . . Indeed a bit more
complicated than measuring shrouds . . .
