I sanded and re-varnished my stairs (several coats) about six years ago. I used Treadmaster stick-on pads, which have worked well, were relatively inexpensive, and have held up.

Two coats of Ephanias gloss varnish. c.. Taped off the stairs except where I wanted the treads, applied one coat of gloss varnish, sprinkled coarse salt. once dry I washed away the salt, leaving behind a clear skid pattern, d.. Two more coats of gloss, followed by three coats of Pettit Sea Gold satin e.. Plywood back (next to engine has three coats of epoxy primer and three coats of two part polyurethane whit paint Stairs are still looking good and grippy when needed.
