Edd,

Our local sailmaker (Bierig Sailmakers) makes great sails, and is just now
experimenting with a new style that he describes as a spider web pattern.

The idea is to get all the warp in line to take the load and reduce stretch.
He has done a couple and is pretty happy with the results. I think he may make
a spiderweb blade for me next year, I am looking forward to it.

The last one he did for me a couple years ago was what we called a hybrid – I
wanted something with the low stretch of the Pentax I had just worn out, with
the durability or Dacron (doesn’t everyone!) So he made a sail where the
corners were huge in Pentax and the main part was Dacron, a couple different
weights, theory being that most of the stretch occurs in the corners. It set
beautifully, but I have only had a Year and a month to try that one out, as I
didn’t sail this summer.

You can see a little picture of the sail here,
https://www.erieinterclub.com/photos/

It is the middle photo, You can see how big the corners are.

He doesn’t do too many sails anymore, but if you tell him you are interested in
either one of these he may want to do it, he likes trying new ideas.

Listers,

I just took my genoa off the forestay for the winter and it looks like, after
13 seasons, well... how do I put this....

“She’s dead, Jim.”

So now I’m in the market for a new 135 cruising headsail, with RF tape, draft
stripes, sun cover on the leech and foot, and sail numbers.

Given that I don’t race the Enterprise any more, I don’t need any super
laminates, but I’d like something not too heavy. Really just something that
will get me where I need to go, be it a daysail, an overnighter or a C&C
Rendezvous.

And, oh yeah, no bank breaking.

Any recommendations? Are those overseas outfits like Far East any good?

All the best,

Edd
