Thanks Shawn.  The boom is longer than the main’s foot because of the way the 
outhaul works.  It’s a screw-drive with a little hand crank on the aft end of 
the boom, taking some 12” of E dimension.  It works that way because the boom 
was originally designed for roller-reefing - there’s a crank near the gooseneck 
that rolls the boom.  Mine can’t do that anymore, with the vang I installed, 
and some previous owner installed padeyes and cheek blocks for slab reefing 
(which is fine with me).  I got a new mainsail this year, and got maybe one or 
two inches more foot length, but that screw-drive outhaul is the foot-length 
limiter.
