The gate valves in the scoopers were probably quite common at the time the boat was built. My C&C 24 had them there, as well (interestingly, they still worked after over 35 years, but the boat was in the fresh water).
I would also have a very close look at the ball valve (on the red, cooling water intake hose). It looks like it is a “normal” brass shutoff valve (hardware store?). If you are sailing in fresh water, it is not a big issue, but in salt water, you need a bronze valve or a Marelon valve (the brass would corrode reasonably quickly). I like Marelon, but some people (probably stronger than me) claim that the plastic is not sturdy enough (if the valve is stuck you risk breaking off the handle).
