I am not an expert, but I imagine that the anode would decay much slower (if it was the wrong one). Btw. The Chandlery has both (zinc and Mg); you just have to make sure that you order the right one.
Also, if you have direct access to one, you should be able to check what metal it is made from (it should be stamped on it).
