Determine the rotted area by moisture meter or by tapping with a hammer, etc. When you do the peel, go an inch or so outside the rotted area. That leaves a ledge of good core. Replace the core ensuring that the replacement material is finished to the same elevation as the good core ledge. Tape the deck and the edges of the "peeled deck". Apply slightly thickened epoxy to the repaired area and ledge with a 1/8 inch notched trowel. Replace the "peel" and apply pressure to squeeze out epoxy and ensure the "peel" is at the same elevation as the deck. Remove excess epoxy with a putty knife or paper towel.
When the epoxy begins to gel, remove the tape. You should be left with a nice, clean repair with a narrow seam all around. To get a really nice finish, sand, fill any tiny imperfections with 3M Premium Filler, sand, flush liberally with water, apply some two part glazing putty then finish with a bit of gelcoat. Dennis C.
