John:

If you a distinct diesel odor in your cabin, chances are you have a fuel leak and no amount of ventilation will make it go away.  You have to address the cause.

Last September, after a sail, my wife went below and she smelled diesel.  Next day, I checked all the hoses, connections, etc. Everything appeared O.K. however, there was now a hint of diesel in the bilge.....I know I have a leak somewhere.  it turned out to be a few corrosion spots on the bottom of the 33 year old aluminum tank where the tank sits on the wooden platform.  I removed the tank and had a machine shop weld a new aluminum bottom in the tank.

And I have a Nicro solar vent on my forward hatch, however, no amount of ventilation in the boat will mask the smell of diesel.
