Watching the "full version" first minute or two, looks like the main's luff was separated from the mast, and the crew was busy gathering up the main and trying to re-feed its luff. He might have been able to run downwind on starboard tack under jib alone (don't know where that would have led), but then he gybed to port and couldn't make enough way to avoid the pier or not get tripped.
