Personally, I've had good experience with 3M butyl tape purchased at a local auto parts store that specializes in material for automotive body shops. Over the years I've gone through two complete boxes of the stuff in projects on my boats and other folks' boats. It comes in either gray or black, and in different widths and thicknesses. And it is quite inexpensive because they sell a lot of it.
