I got both of your emails to the list. I believe that the light is a simple low voltage indicator. If the battery gets a shorted cell or a bad connection then the light will illuminate. If the alternator diodes get blown or the alternator stops generating enough charge to keep up with the loads then the battery will begin to discharge and when the voltage goes low enough then the light will also illuminate.
Since the symptoms stop when you switch the battery selector then I would say that the possibility of the alternator being blown or low output is pretty well eliminated. The possibility of the sensing wires at or connected to the panel is also pretty well eliminated. I would take a voltage reading directly on the battery terminals. If it is normal-ish (11.5 to 12.7) then I would say the battery is fine. Now the remaining culprit is the wiring and connectors between the battery and the switch. Maybe even the contacts in the switch.
