Hi Rod,

Beyond the physical attachment of a tiller head to the rudder post, you’ll also
need to address the sizeable hole that is cut in the cockpit that accommodates
the idler assembly as well as the pedestal guard. Not to mention where your
engine controls will need to be relocated.

The Edson tiller head assembly has a maximum rudder size of 1 ½” and I suspect
your rudder post is at least 2 3/8”.

I purchased a C&C Landfall this season as an upgrade from a tiller steered C&C
25 (along with sailing Lasers and Etchells over the past decade) and while my
first few times backing up the boat using a wheel were “experiences”, I found
that in general, it was a breeze to sail with a very light feel at the wheel
and allowed my guests far more freedom to move around the cockpit.

If you’re married to the notion of using a tiller on the boat, I would first
use a set of calipers to measure the diameter of the rudder post. Then put in
a call to Rudy at D&R Marine in Freetown MA. Rudy was the procurement guy for
Oday, Pearson, and Cal and may know of a suitable part that could be adapted to
a C&C Rudder post. The other source may be South Shore Marine (Rob
Maclaughlin) up in Niagara on the Lake.

Best of luck and welcome to the group!

Subject: Stus-List Thinking of a Wheel to Tiller Conversion

Hi everyone my name is Rod Anderson and this is my first post to the list. I
hail from Shelter Island, NY where I have a small boat shop. I bought a 1980
C&C 32 this year and coming from the Etchells world I'm uncomfortable with a
wheel. I am thinking about changing the helm from the Edson setup it has now to
a tiller which I believe was also available . My question is does anyone know
where to source the tiller fitting or possibly find a used one. The tiller
itself is not a problem as I can build one in the shop. Thanks!
Rod
