And, in addition, tie an inside bowline so the tail is inside of the loop. If I 
happen to make the tail too long, I then put it into the clew ring so it is not 
loose.

The bowlines should be tied in opposite directions so the flat side is facing 
in against the shroud and doesn't get hung.  In other words the port side 
bowline should have the flat side facing the starboard side and vice versa.   
This reduces the chance of hanging up on a shroud.   Jerry.
