Doug, i just bought a couple of handheld strobes from NorthAmericanSurvivalSystems.com <http://northamericansurvivalsystems.com/>. I think they will be very effective insurance for several activities that my wife are involved with including sailing. They weigh 5 oz including two Lithium CR123 batteries that are advertised to operate at full output for 15 hours, and continue to flash at 35 hours. Waterproof to 50ft. Built from anodized aluminum with “o” ring seals. The four LEDs make it visible to the horizon at 10 miles but from the air up to 14 miles. They look very sturdy! Strobes are something you hope to never need! I think one of these and a powerful whistle will always be on my inflatable vest, and my backpack when hiking or skiing.
