Paul: I have a small round duct going to the v-berth and an equal size round duct going to the aft cabin. All ducting is on the starboard side. The ducting to the aft cabin runs through the head area behind the sliding doors but it is located high in this area, just below the deck. (I actually use a header with multiple vents in my main salon.)
I do not have a scoop on my intake for any of my thru hulls. A grate might keep out some of the jellyfish, but some might still break up and go through. When it happens, the unit shows a high pressure alarm and shuts down to avoid damaging the unit. Lately, we have had a lot fewer jellyfish for some reason. It very well could be that the 16,000 Btu unit may fit today. Keep in mind that mine is more than 10 years old. I can take some pics and send them to you if you would like...
