On the longest darkest night of the year, and with the prospect of inclement weather, now would be a good time to bring back the feast of Yule!
Time to spark up those Yule logs! For those of us that can. I know that if I had a fire place I would. Anyway, happy Yule, fellow Listers! This just out: 3:42 PM AST Sunday 21 December 2014 Special weather statement in effect for: Sydney Metro and Cape Breton County Rain and wind expected for Christmas. An intense weather system will track toward the Maritimes later this week. Rain will develop through the day Wednesday and become heavy at times on Christmas Day. Strong southerly winds and warm temperatures will also accompany this system. Current indications suggest that rainfall amounts and wind strength could approach or exceed warning criteria. Additionally....Tides will be running high this week so coastal water levels and waves could be a concern. Environment Canada will continue to monitor the development of this system providing updates as new information becomes available. Those planning travel or other weather-sensitive activities for later in the week are advised to monitor future forecasts for more further information. Please monitor the latest forecasts and warnings from Environment Canada at www.weatheroffice.gc.ca. The days start getting longer now, leading back to summer. I like that. Happy Solstice everyone! Some clouds. Brought Touche' back from Pensacola last week. A bit chilly for me. High 40's at sun up, mid to high 60's during the day. Worst day was Wednesday. Left The Wharf Marina on the ICW at Orange Beach, Alabama an hour before sunrise in 48F weather. Sun came up as we motored across Bon Secour Bay off east Mobile Bay. Had enough wind to roll out genoa to gain half knot or so. It was a 12 hour passage to Gulfport. Mississippi Got into Mandeville Thursday a bit before sundown. Started raining on us as we were leaving the marina in my truck. Timing is everything. One funny thing happened on the trip. On Wednesday, we passed a tow in the Pas au Herons Channel behind Dauphin Island, Alabama, The "Margaret" was pushing 4 loads wide and 2 "strung out" for a total of 8 barges. Margaret was only managing 2.7 knots according to AIS. On Thursday, after spending the night in Gulfport, we again passed the "Margaret" at the east end of Lake Borgne. I was soooo tempted to hail them with "It's me again, Margaret" (remember the Ray Stevens song?). Dennis C.
