I had the same thing happen to me this year on both of my 3 year old vents. It turns out it wasn't the battery failing but the motor. The stator ( the part that doesn't move ) started to break down and drop particles onto the brushes which started to short out and break off. The motor is of extremely poor quality. I sourced a "solar motor" from company called Tamiya ( part # 76004) that produce primarily for the rc industry for about $20 each. Worked like a charm.
