Hello Joel,

I am sitting here in my C & C 41 in our dock in Detroit looking at the base of
the mast.  This boat is a long time vetran of Great Lakes Racing and has done
many Mackinac races. Rules require the steped mast be secued at the base and at
the deck.  We have a welded steel box 16 1/2" x 6 1/2" x 3" deep.  Made with 3"
angle iron on the ends, toes in welded to 1/4" plates for the sides. Ends are
fastened to the floor beams, there are 4" wooded wedges on all four sides of
the mast with a 3/8" bolt through the whole assembly, drilled through the base
of the mast.
At the deck there are more wooden wedges surroundig the mast.
This is always a good idea even if you don't race. Picture your salon becoming
the inside of a blender if you lose the rigging with the base of the mast
whipping around inside the boat. It's a must do.

Subject: Stus-List Securing mast to step

I need to secure the keel stepped mast to the step to comply with the offshore
sailing regs.  The mast sits in the base about 1.5 inches.  I'm thinking of
bolting 2 short tangs to the base and running a bolt or threaded rod through
the mast and tangs.  Luckily, the wires exit at the cabin top, so they are safe.

Thoughts?  Recommendations?
