That pretty much describes how the factory did it on our 37.

To be more exact, in our case it is a "U"shaped bracket that is bolted down
to the metal mast step.  The tangs of this bracket stick up about 8".  The
mast slips over this when the mast is set into the boat, so the bracket is
hidden up inside the base of the mast.  A 1/2" S/S bolt passes through the
mast, through holes in each tang and out the other side of the mast where
there is nyloc nut to keep it in place.  I think the bracket is made of
aluminium and came from Offshore Spars with the mast and step when the boat
was built.
