In 2003 a J105 heading for Block Island race week crashed into a large motor yacht because the crew of the J105 could not figure out how to stop the tiller auto pilot. The captain was below and had a heart attack after the collision and died on the way to the hospital. No one was on watch on the yacht which was also on autopilot. Sometimes pushing the right button isn't easy. Jerry
Larchmont Sailor Dies, Boat Sinks After Colliding with Yacht on Long Island Sound by Judy Silberstein (June 21, 2003) Larchmont sailor Joachim Schulz-Heik died early Friday morning, June 20, after he went into cardiac arrest in the wake of a boating accident on the Long Island Sound. It was 12:45 am on Friday morning when the 122-foot motor yacht Mariner III reported colliding with the 35-foot sailboat Hilaria, 8 miles south of Guilford Connecticut on Long Island Sound. The Hilaria was enroute to Rhode Island to join the fleet of over 200 boats that will be racing from June 22 to 27 in the 20th anniversary and fortieth year of the Storm Trysail Club’s biennial Block Island Race Week. Aboard the Hilaria were Captain Schulz-Heik, his son Jay and crewmember Scott Rosasco, according to the Suffolk, NY Police Department that is investigating the incident along with the Coast Guard. The Hilaria sank within 2 minutes, and the three men, all wearing life jackets, were thrown into the water and pulled out by the crew of the Mariner III within another five minutes. According to the Coast Guard, Captain Schulz-Heik immediately started having breathing problems and chest pains and soon went into cardiac arrest. The Mariner crew began CPR, which was continued by the Coast Guard that rendezvoused with the Mariner III and by the EMT’s in the ambulance that met the rescue boat in New Haven. Nevertheless, Schulz-Heik did not survive. -----Original Message----- From: Russ & Melody via CnC-List <cnc-list@cnc-list.com> To: Peter Fell <prf...@gmail.com>; cnc-list <cnc-list@cnc-list.com> Sent: Wed, May 14, 2014 9:21 am Subject: Re: Stus-List PO,ed He may be experiencing impotence or other minor marital discomfort.
