I respect Fred's knowledge and experience, but just for the sake of
diversity I would like to raise awareness that there are other autopilot
controllers out there besides Raymarine.

Take time to review the features, functions and usability of different
products before plopping down hard earned cash and being disappointed.
Many marine stores have displays set up that will give you hands on
knowledge across brands. Raymarine has recently caught up to the market so
set up and commissioning wizards aren't that different across brands.
IMHO, and N2K is a wonderful thing, but consistency with one manufacturer
across your system does alleviate a lot of headaches and would be something
to consider.

drive will be the issue on a LF38.

The EV-200 Sail paired with an Octopus 1212LAM12 hydraulic linear drive
would be my choice. The Defender pricing is pretty stunning - lower than my
dealer pricing by a fair amount. They must have swung a sweet volume deal
with Raymarine.

I'm not sold on the wireless autopilot remote thing, however. Seems like
another thing to go wrong; and it will only go wrong when you're in close
proximity to another boat, or something else hard...

Frank,

Talk to Fred. There was a recent thread about a pilot for a 38.
