My friend with a big Ford Lehman in his motorsailer had overheating problems
for a couple of years. We went through the whole water system at least a dozen
times.... cleaned out the heat exchanger, fixed pumps, and so forth. It was a
pain. Ended up being a small leak in the incoming water filter gasket - it was
letting in a little air under load. It was fine at the dock (even with the boat
tied down and running in gear with a load), but out in the ocean....no go.

Don't look to replace the engine for overheating unless you find out there is a
crack in the block or the head. The rest is just tracing the water path and
making sure that everything is working.

I had a similar problem. For years, once or twice a year my Yanmar would behave
strangely. After running for a while, if I turned it off and waited about 10 to
15 minutes, when I turned it back on it would whistle that it was not
circulating water. But it was. It became annoying when it got more frequent. I
chased the water system, replaced the impeller, cleaned the incoming water
filter, etc. to no avail. Finally, an impeller broke apart and I went through
it again, got all the pieces of the impeller out (put it back together with
tape to make sure) and tried again.

A new impeller didn't cure it. So, back through it again. This time, upon
opening the zinc on the forward end of the engine to replace it (to eliminate
everything that would impede water flow), I stuck a rod down the hose leading
to that area. Out popped a very hard, rusty part of an impeller. All the
impellers I have replaced over the years came out whole, so this was something
I had never seen before!!!! It must have been bouncing around inside that hose
for years! I've had the boat for 20, so.....

Now the engine spits more water than ever and I haven't heard the 'no water'
squeal since.

Fred is right - look it over carefully and eliminate the other possible
problems before you think of replacement.

Frank — just so I understand: your 3QM is overheating? Does the engine run
well otherwise? Before you go to all the trouble and expense of re-powering,
find a really good diesel guy to look at your engine.

I had a great guy do some work on my 3QM a few years back, and he told me the
engines were originally built for hard, continuous use (industrial compressors
and the like), and if properly maintained, they should last a very long time in
a sailboat.

I did find an issue with mine overheating a couple of seasons back. Because
the fresh water heat exchanger is mounted to the engine at an angle, you can
check the fluid level when the engine is off, and it will appear that the
coolant level is fine. But with the engine running (and cool, so you don’t get
burned), pull the fill cap and you’ll see that the system needs more coolant;
it settles to the bottom end of the heat exchanger where the cap is when the
pump isn’t running. You can also see if there’s much coolant running with the
cap off.

Other possible things to do: check the coolant pump impeller; rod out the
passages in the heat exchanger; make sure you’ve got plenty of raw (sea) water
running through; check the exhaust mixing elbow for build-up.

And I’m sure other listers will add to this.

what is approx cost.
The second question is windllas type and installation. Did anybody install
windlass in anchor compartment?
I have her for approx. 20 years and finally these should be done,
