Thanks to all, as expected varied answers give me good perspective.  My pan 
also has the teak grate as others have mentioned, as well as no real easy way 
to drain into the main bilge, so one of those strainer deals upstream of a good 
diaphragm pump sounds like the ticket.

Later, I will describe my observations of mystery water trickling into the 
bilge from the forepeak 

But I digress, back to work.
