My dad always said that a boat name should easily fit on the transom and be clear enough that you don't need to spell it over the radio for a dockmaster when you call. I like the idea that the name shouldn't be embarrassing when you're making a serious radio call, ie "Securite, this is the sailing vessel, (sounded really clever after a few rums)..." In my opinion, a sailboat's name should be a little bit romantic because sailboats are romantic things.
