I use 30 weight engine oil. The long tube part of the assembly is screwed on to the motor housing and can be undone with a strap wrench without removing the unit from the boat. I put the helm hard over to extend the ram, undo the tube, slide it towards the quadrant, wipe off the exposed screw with a lint free cloth and lightly oil the screw. Reassemble and that's it. Every few years, if I happen to remember, I pull the whole unit, dismantle it and replace the belt or anything that looks worn. One year the carriage and recirculating balls got away on me.
