Sometimes we'll heave to to reef. But if I have a Harken or Antal track or the like, I'm more likely to turn dead downwind and pull the sail down that way. The benefits to doing that include the fact that waves won't be sweeping the deck and the apparent wind is less. my old Dad always used to tell me that the best time to reef is when you first think about it. I've never regretted taking that advice.
