Bad shore power wiring and poorly bonded grounds can cause excessive corrosion. Bad electrical systems on neighboring boats could also exacerbate your problems. I think most people follow the practice of unplugging from shore unless absolutely necessary. A top off for the batteries is enough every 2-4 weeks. If the zinc wasn't corroded then you don't need a second one. But having the prop corrode worse than the zinc leads me to agree that you may not have had good contact. I make sure to get the ones that have little copper balls on the inner surface to press in tight to the shaft. You might also look for a prop zinc if available.
