I would love to know what happened to the original! Years ago we had a 35 MK I owner want to measure our rudder because his had fallen off as well ☹ I actually can see one way this can happen. The ONLY things holding the rudder in a 35 MK I are an *iron* collar with 2 little tiny set screws right above the rudder tube and whatever friction the quadrant assembly provides. My iron collar was at least 50% gone if not more and any time you whacked it a big piece would come off. What I did is the following:
1. Made a new upper bearing. This is just a round piece of plastic with a hole in the middle and some screw holes. If it is loose not only does it feel loose it stresses the rudder tube. 2. Bought a stainless steel collar that CLAMPS on the rudder stock. This is installed right above the upper bearing. This was a second support in case the iron collar finally came off. I would suggest every 35 MK I owner do this. It takes maybe 2 minutes. 3. The next year we got the iron collar off (major PITA in close quarters) and replaced it with a stainless collar. So now we have 2 stainless clamping collars – thanks McMaster – instead of one iron set screw collar. Next thing is to add some glass to the plywood-fiberglass supports. The two that angle forward look like they could use a little reinforcing. BTW – the 35 rudder is pretty light. You can pick it up and carry it around no problem. Joe Della Barba Coquina C&C 35 MK I
