Installed two Nicros and two Sunsei on our boat in 2008.
Pros and Cons; Both move air and don't leak when it rains. Neither one of the
models I chose can be removed, but have a feature to close them off from inside
when needed offshore. The Sunsei requires you to slide the fan up inside the
housing. The Nicro is shut by sliding a cylinder separate from the fan up
inside. The Sunsei can be turned off or reversed easily with a switch while
Nicro comes with On/Off switch and you need to change blades to select intake
or exhaust. I think they would work offshore as well as a Dorade, but would
expect some drips and not install one over my bunk. They remain dry in heavy,
wind driven rain, and I only close them when I'm trying to heat the cabin. The
Sunsei has a better neoprene gasket design, but is a larger diameter on deck
and protrudes further into the cabin, and is slighter higher on deck. Noise
level is slightly higher on the Sunsei than on the Nicro. The Sunsei have a
rubber gasket around the outside glass solar panel that is starting to weather
and crack after 5 years. One Sunsei fan would snag slack genoa sheets because
of the location, so I glassed a couple wedges in front so sheets ride easily up
and over. I haven't changed batteries, but the fans will run well past dark. I
probably need to change the batteries.

Summary: check new designs for features before choosing best one for you.

Alex,

If it's this one:

http://www.marinco.com/product/daynight-plus-vent

Then it's permanent mount. I wish it weren't. I wish Nicro still made a
removable one. You can still find the Nicro removables on eBay.

There are other powered day/night vents available. Sunsei makes one. Don't know
anything about it.

Rick and Dennis,

Thanks, I was at WESTMARINE yesterday and noticed the daynight one on display
seemed removable, but the packaging said it was permanent, and the sales person
was not too informative. Will do further research.

I had already commented that the Nicro 4" stainless Day/Night 1000 I bought
from West Marine for use in my foredeck hatch last spring is removable.
There is a collar attached to the boat with 4 screws, and the vent itself
pushes into the collar. I'm pretty sure that the deck plate you use to seal up
a Nicro cowl vent would also work to seal up the collar.

I had to go to West Marine this afternoon to pick up some parts for my Zodiac
inflatable, so I decided to look at the Nicro vents in stock to see if the
design had changed to one that was not removable. The inventory of Day/Night
Plus Solar Vents (the name has apparently changed) that they had is the same as
mine. There is a collar with seal that attaches to the deck, a fan blade that
can be flipped over to give either intake or exhaust, and a removable fan. The
3" moves 600 cu.ft/hour and the 4" moves 1000. See page
536 of the 2013 WM catalog, or search their website for part number 10447084.

There are, indeed, two styles of Nicro vents. The other one is called a Mini
Vent 1000, moves 700 cu.ft/hour when the sun is shining and gives passive
ventilation if you have a breeze at night, and it is attached directly to the
deck without the need for a "Nicro Vent Deck Plate". It IS cheaper than the
Day/Night vent. Also see page 536 or search for part number 183733.
Perhaps this is the one that Dennis was thinking about in his earlier response.

BTW, there is also a Nicro Air Vent 500, which is passive only (moves
600-1000 CU.Ft/hr is a 15 knot breeze) and attaches directly to the deck.
FWIW, it is only $49.
