I have the GX 1700 installed to port of the companionway above the dry sink on 
a 30-1.
The GPS come up quickly, have not noticed any reception problems.

Did you get the Standard Horizon GX 1700? I am looking at that unit and am 
trying to find out if it can be connected to an external GPS antenna as I am 
told the internal antena may not work if the unit is installed below decks
